How Local Liquid Started
Kansas City has always had an extraordinary independent coffee scene. Roasters like Oddly Correct, Thou Mayest, Post Coffee Company, and Broadway Cafe have quietly built one of the most exciting specialty coffee communities in the midwest — and most of the country has no idea it exists. When I founded Bier Station, one of Kansas City’s most beloved craft beer bars, I watched the same thing happen with KC’s craft beer scene — world-class local producers that deserved a bigger audience. Local Liquid is built on the same idea, but with coffee.
Local Liquid wouldn’t exist without my business partner Michael Richardson. Michael and I became close friends when he stepped up to help Bier Station during COVID — building us an e-commerce beer store pro bono to help us survive when in-person business was impossible. That kind of friendship doesn’t go unnoticed.
Years later, when the idea for Local Liquid came together, Michael was the obvious partner. He built the platform, handles the technology, and brings the same dedication and craft to Local Liquid that he brought to helping us through the hardest stretch of Bier Station’s life.
I started Local Liquid in December 2024 with a simple mission: connect Kansas City’s incredible indie roasters with coffee lovers everywhere — whether they’re across town or across the country.

How Our Club Works
We keep it simple. Each week, one roaster takes the spotlight — and every member scheduled for delivery that week receives that roaster’s coffee, carefully selected, freshly roasted, and shipped directly to your door. When you join, you choose your roast preference (regular or espresso), your bag size (12 oz or 2 lb), and how often you’d like it delivered: weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly. From there, we handle everything else.
Every delivery comes with a personalized note about that week’s roaster: their story, where they source their beans, and how to get the best cup from what we’ve sent. It’s part coffee club, part guided tour of the KC coffee scene.

Hi, I’m John Couture — lifelong KCMO resident, founder of Local Liquid, and former owner of Bier Station, Kansas City’s go-to craft beer destination for over a decade. I’ve spent my career connecting people with great locally made drinks and the independent producers behind them.
Local Liquid is the next chapter of that mission — and I’m incredibly grateful for every roaster partner, club member, and Kansas Citian who’s been part of it since day one.
